In Memoriam: Orlando Restaurants that Closed in 2020 So Far

This year, we remember the restaurants – some local places and some national places – who have left us in 2020 here in Orlando.

The restaurant industry is notorious for their high rate of closures in the first year, but this year may have pushed things along faster. According to some estimates, from the period of January to October 2019, a total of 54 restaurants closed while in 2020 in that same time period over 120 restaurants have closed.

Restaurants closed this year cited many different issues and reasons, some of which relate to the ongoing pandemic and subsequent economic effects, including rent/land lord issues, while others have been on the edge of closing and this year just accelerated things. It does appear also that a lot of the restaurants closed in the downtown Orlando location, most likely effected with the reduction of foot traffic in the area with the increase of people working from home.

A reminder to make sure to visit and support your beloved local Orlando restaurants if you are able to.

Note – some of the below restaurants have closed certain locations, but have other locations still open in the Central Florida area. Details: https://tastychomps.com/2020/11/in-memoriam-orlando-restaurants-that-closed-in-2020-so-far.html

Big Fin Seafood Kitchen Debuts New 3-Course $35 Supports Locals Menu till end of 2020

Visit Orlando’s Magical Dining Month may have ended on October 31 this year, but Big Fin Seafood Kitchen is going to keep the value going for locals in Orlando with a new 3-Course $35 menu going on from November 1 to December 30th, 2020. The menu is called the “Big Fin Seafood Supports Locals” menu.

Michael Venutolo, General Manager at Big Fin tells us, “As a restaurant is located in the heart of Dr. Phillips, we know everyone has been stressed and is hurting financially and we want them to be able to escape and have a quality meal out. We will also be continuing to donate $1 for every meal sold to Feed the Need Florida to help those in need and unable to feed their families as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.” Details: https://tastychomps.com/2020/11/big-fin-seafood-kitchen-debuts-new-3-course-35-supports-locals-menu-till-end-of-2020.html

Kabooki Sushi unveiled its newly renovated and expanded building on Tuesday night during a friends and family event. Owner Henry Moso, Orlando’s first and only James Beard Rising Star Chef of the Year nominee, has been working hard throughout the pandemic plotting and building out the expansion of his beloved original location.   Kabooki Sushi v2.0 will be in soft opening mode today through Thursday and will fully open for dinner service starting this Sunday. First Look: New Sear + Sea Restaurant Opens at JW Marriott Bonnet Creek Resort

Did you know a new hotel opened this year in the Walt Disney World area? Just a hop, skip, and jump away from Disney Springs, the 16-floor, 516-room sleek and ultra-modern luxury JW Marriott Hotel opened in July of 2020 at the Bonnet Creek Resort. The hotel is home to what may be one of my favorite new restaurants of 2020, Sear+Sea Woodfire Grill, the hotel’s signature culinary steakhouse featuring wood-fired creations from rich cuts of steak to the best of local seafood. RAPCF presents Monster Mash: A Mask-for-Aid Ball

For many, Halloween is regarded as one of the most festive times of the year. An opportunity to dress up in costumes, decorate our homes, hand out candy to trick-or-treaters, and indulge in a few spooky themed treats ourselves. But this Halloween feels a little different. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way many of us are able to work, gather, and even celebrate our holidays, Halloween included. Perhaps no industry has felt the impact quite like the restaurant and hospitality industry. And so, the Restaurant and Allied Partnership of Central Florida (RAPCF) has orchestrated the Monster Mash: A Mask-for-Aid Ball, geared towards providing assistance to participating local restaurants toward their recovery. Restaurants from across central Florida have gathered to celebrate this Halloween-themed gala, and we were lucky enough to join in.
